B

Yesterday didn’t quite happen as planned. We were going to go on a bike ride to the bank and eat BBQ for lunch. But… we have been waiting for a month or so for someone to come and do some work on our basement and they decided to come today. Figures!! However, we decided not to let the day go to waste.

First, we decided we would bake the workmen some cookies. Okay, cookie starts with “C” but bake starts with “B” so we went with that. The kids took turns scooping out cookie dough and Karin put the cookie sheet in the oven.

While we waited for the cookies to bake we played in the backyard (what do you know, another “B”) where the kids rode their bikes.

Caleb also decided he was going to look for bugs and put them in his bug catcher. All we found was a daddy long legs and he got away before we could catch him.

We have a recent addition to our family in the backyard that’s worth noting. It seems a Robin decided to build her nest on the back of our basketball hoop. So, not only do we have a bird nest but we also have four baby birds. We have observed them from the construction of the nest to the laying of the eggs to the hatching of the eggs. We have watched the mama bird feed the baby birds and watched the baby birds go from hairless little things with closed eyes to opening their eyes and spreading their wings. They are amazing to watch and the kids are learning to appreciate nature at its finest. And they are being very understanding about not being able to play basketball for a while.

Caleb thought we should celebrate Braelyn today since her name starts with a “B” and she is a baby. Clever!!

After the cookies were done, out of the oven, and cooled, Caleb took them down to the men working on the basement (another “B”).

We then decided to take a bike ride down to the end of our street. Caleb rode his bike and I put the girls in the bike cart and rode my bike. Along the way we looked for “B” words. We found: a balloon arch over someone’s door, a bird feeder, several birds, a basketball hoop and some neighbors playing baseball. As we were riding Caleb said, “Bump” starts with “B” and, sure enough, there was a bump in the road. And then he told me he needed to use his brakes, which he then proudly announced starts with a “B”.

Before naptime I asked Caleb to find some books that start with the letter “B”. He came downstairs with a Basic Math book. Not really what I was looking for and not really a story so I sent him back upstairs. He ended up finding some good ones. We read Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?, Bless Everyone, and Butter Battle Book.

Getting in the spirit of the letter “B”, Karin called out, “Bump truck!” when the garbage truck drove past. Okay, so it wasn't a dump truck and dump truck doesn’t start with “B” but she tried. Plus, I think it’s cute that she calls the trash and recycle trucks bump trucks.

After the workmen left for the day, we decided to try a longer bike ride. This time we rode throughout the neighborhood, up and down hills and around turns. I was so busy trying to make sure Caleb was safe we completely forgot to look for any “B’s.”

When we got home Caleb and I decided to make some Banana Bread. A friend of mine shared a recipe with me last summer and it is hands-down the best Banana Bread I have ever tasted. It freezes well, though we generally eat both loaves before they can even begin to freeze. I think Caleb enjoyed making the bread with me but I think he enjoyed eating it even more.

And we can’t forget about learning the sign. Here they are with their “B.”

All in all, not a bad day. We found a lot of ways to talk about the letter “B” even if our original plans didn’t pan out. It’s amazing how many letters you can find if you really look.
