Yesterday we set out to find the letter “A.”
Our first stop was the local airport. At the entrance of the airport we found a jet and the kids had fun walking around and looking at the aircraft up close. We then went to the terminal and looked around at the inside of the airport. Caleb looked for all the “A’s” in the airport. He found signs such as arrival, baggage, and departure and counted how many times he saw an “A” in the airport. There was not a lot of traffic at the airport today but as we were leaving we got to see a plane fly in, land, and taxi down the runway.
From the airport we drove a few miles down the highway to the orchard to pick up some apples. The kids each got to pick out their own apples (Caleb chose green and Karin chose red) as well as some apples to make apple turnovers. While at the orchard we also looked for flowers and vegetables that started with the letter “A” such as asparagus, artichokes and azaleas. Caleb also thought ahead to future letters of the alphabet commenting that we should come back for peppers when we talk about “P” and buy a birdhouse for “B.”
On the drive home we talked about animals with a name that starts with “A”. We came up with aardvark, anteater, antelope, ape, alligator, and ant.
When we got home the kids sliced the apples and mixed them with sugar and cinnamon. We then spooned out the mixture into individual pie crusts, sealed them, and baked them in the oven. They were delicious!! We decided we should do the same thing for blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries.
(The battery in my camera died in the middle of cooking our treat so I had to switch to Caleb's camera; some of the photos got a little fuzzy).
After our treat we read A Basket Bed for Baby Moses, All About Me and some of Aesop’s Fables. We also made a matching folder. With this folder the kids matched individual letters to letters laminated in a folder (held in the folder with Velcro).
We also talked about how to sign the letter “A.” Caleb’s awesome kindergarten teacher, Mr. Brown, taught his class how to sign each letter as they learned it so Caleb taught his sister the sign for “A” today.
Our “A” day was fun and we learned a lot.
I wonder what our “B” day will hold…
